This piece is biblically inspired by the interaction between God and Moses in the Book of Exodus. There is a moment when Moses requests of God to see God’s face. After all the intimacy between the them, the ongoing relationship and conversation, and the words that they spoke “face to face,” Moses still desires a vision of God. God responds that no person may see God and live, so instead God carefully places Moses in the cleft of the rock. It is from that cradle that God promises to “pass all of God’s goodness before him.”
In this painting Moses sits folding into himself, vulnerable, exposed, but safe. I imagine Moses’ feeling of being surrounded by God’s goodness. To me this harkened back to Moses’ first encounter with God at the burning bush. Here, the holiness of that moment comes out from Moses himself and connects to the other elements of our natural world. These elements glitter with God’s glory and caress every inch of Moses. |
