Artist’s Statement |
I am inspired by mystery. I use painting as a medium to more deeply understand Biblical accounts and stories as well as the world around me. I pursue ideas through an emotive response to color. Because of this, I tend to use bright combinations of color, and develop layers of shadow and light, which give vivacious detail to the subtle reality around us.My work is mostly representational, sometimes bordering on surrealism and some abstraction, allowing the onlooker to discover the relationship between the subjects in my work in a personal way. When using Biblical text as a starting point, I often concentrate on a particular sentence, phrase, or even word. I read the text in its original Hebrew, with the help of multiple translations. In doing this, I unlock the myriads of meanings possible within language. Out of one word, sometimes even a letter, comes a visual presentation—wordless, yet filled with meaning and direction.I may work on the same subject or story several times, each time exploring the complexity of color, motivation and shape. Whether religiously motivated, or from the passion I feel for life, my art expresses a deep desire for understanding, peace and fulfillment that can be shared by those who see my work. |
